OSPREY - -To many of us here on the East End, this magnificent fish
hawk is taken for granted. Yet to the visitors, it is a rare and special treat
not to be missed.

A Special Osprey Sighting
By PAULSTOUTENBURGH
Good friends of ours asked us to take
their house guest and his wife for a close -
up view of our well -known fish hawk here
on the East End. We later found out the
house guest was the 74- year -old president
of the Linnean Society, that prestigious
group so involved in the plant world.
They are both natives of England, where
the osprey is extinct. It can only be seen
in Scotland after a long boat ride, and
then standing in line for hours to look
through a telescope at the bird.
Therefore, if we could show them the
osprey close up, it would be a highlight of
their trip.
We were to meet in Sterling Harbor in
Greenport and proceed on our friends'
boat to Orient. There we were to transfer
to dinghies and head up into the shallow
waters of Hallocks Bay, where the
ospreys nest. Well, our plans almost
didn't work out. There was no wind to
sail. The first osprey we went to see had
already left and the motor on one dinghy
failed. However, with the other dinghy
we did get our friends within good
eyesight of two birds still on the nest
feeding young. How thrilled they were to
see something they longed to see for so
many years.
It brought to mind how often we take
things for granted. Here we can see an
osprey any day of the week and think
nothing of it. While in a different land one
has to stand in line for hours just to get a
glimpse through a telescope of what we
view as common.
Our friends also were interested in the
plants of our country, so we took them up
one of the lonely, shallow creeks that can
be found in this most pristine area. We
felt rather like the African Queen. Rich,
tall thatch grass pressed along our sides
as we moved further and further inland.
Snowy egrets, a great blue heron and a
great white heron fed in the shallows
nearby. These were rich waters and they
knew it and took advantage of it.
Crossed from Bay to Bay
We landed at one point and crossed the
barrier beach that separates Gardiners
Bay from Orient Harbor. Here the unique
horned poppy, the prickly pear cactus,
Russian thistle, dusty miller, Virginia
creeper and, of course, the well -known
poison ivy caught their eye for ex-
amination. We passed a freshwater
pond that many years ago had been part

of a fish - processing factory out on this
lonely barrier beach. The pond was doing
a great job of populating the area with
mosquitoes. In fact, so much so that we
had to literally run away from them as
they swarmed over us. Over on the
Gardiners Bay side we all waded in the
clean cool waters of that broad bay.
It was a hot and humid day with the sun
doing its best to melt us down. Yet the
two elderly folks couldn't be daunted.
Their stamina and vigor are the key to
their success. Everything seemed
important to them. They wanted to see
this shell. They were interested in that
plant. "What bird was that ?"
As we walked we also listened to their
tales and experiences of many years. We
bounded back and forth from New
Guinea to the Artie Circle and back down
to Africa. It was an afternoon of sheer
enjoyment. They had found the world
around them an exciting and interesting
place and were taking advantage of
every day. Later at dinner we sat
spellbound listening to the tales and
adventures collected through a lifetime.
Back to Port
As the evening grew late we had to
head back to our boat moored in Sterling
Harbor. The evening, like so many
during this hot and humid period, was
calm. Not a breath of air moved. Quietly
we slipped into our little dinghy and
started the motor to get to our boat. I
resented even the noise from our tiny,
two -horse engine as it disturbed the
magic of the night.
The gold and silver lights of the harbor
led pathways across the mirrored water.
The boats of the harbor all headed into
the tide. Atop some of their masts anchor
lights twinkled. It seemed the whole
world was asleep and we were the only
ones about. In and out we moved among
spacious yachts and sleek sailboats.
Finally our own little world appeared
and in no time we were aboard. We sat
for a few moments and absorbed the
wonder about us, but the hour was
getting late and so we opened the
companionway and went below. Luckily
we had made up the bunks before we left.
I don't remember too much from then on,
for the night took over and we were
asleep.
