Wooden Boat BpPAUL STOUTENBURGH I saw someone rowing an old wooden boat and realized it was almost like seeing an antique car. Aluminum, plastics and fiberglass, with their low maintenance and durability, have surely taken over the boat industry. Yet if you keep a sharp eye out you will probably be able to spot one of these old wooden boats, for they are becoming a thing of the past. Wooden boats have a special place in my memories for those hand - me -downs opened a world of adventure for us kids many, many years ago. The wooden rowboat was the center of action for most of us during the summer. On calm days we ventured out as far as the black buoy in the middle of the bay. That was a faraway place for us and when we got there we were at the end of our world. Fishing was always bottom fishing and we usually rigged a small hook close to the sinker and a larger one for weaks about three feet up. Squid was the bait of the day. We got a variety of fish depending upon what time of the year it was. Porgies, weakfish, kingfish, an occasional sand shark (dogfish), and the then -- common blowfish seemed to always be there. Come to think of it, I haven't seen any kingfish with their little goatees under their chins caught of late. Porgies always gave you a good scrap and it was in those early days we learned how to avoid their spiny fins when cleaning them. Blowfish Abundant Blowfish we'd get by the pail off any dock along the bay front. In shallow water, you'd look down on them and watch their big -eyed bodies come to your hook. Anything seemed to work for bait -- even an empty hook when they were hungry. Of course, the rule in our house was if you caught it, you cleaned it and ate it, so the pail of blowfish, although fun when getting them, became a pain in the neck to us kids to clean. After a day's cleaning of blowfish, our hands looked like raw white meat because of their rough sandpaper -like skin. But eating them was the best. There wasn't a fish that could touch them. You'd pick them up and eat them like an ear of corn. One bone down the back and that was all. Swimming from a rowboat ranked a close second to fishing. As we'd spend most of the day jumping and diving around those boats, swimming just came naturally. I'm sure our screams and yells could have been heard up and down the beach. And, of course, when things got dull the boys would always rock the boat until eventually we'd turn it over with the girls screaming to our delight. Once it was over, we'd lift it so we could trap air inside and then swim -underneath, becoming a part of Jules Vernes's underwater world.. I can remember how hollow our voices sounded and the greenish light of the water all around as we marveled with joy at our accomplishment. Then there were the days we'd go crabbing in the creek. That's when it was nothing to get half a washtub full of crabs, and five or six of them would be softies at that. Needless to say, the boats were never quite the same after a crabbing venture. Globs of mud and masses of sea lettuce would be strewn about. At the end of the day, a few pails of water splashed around then bailed out put the boat almost back in the same condition as when we started. Seems the crabs liked the muddy places best, and when you scooped them up in youthful excitement, you'd usually get half the creek along with them. All this came aboard, the black mud trailing behind. Firelighting for. Eels and Crabs As we grew older, 14 e'd use those same boats firefighting for eels and crabs at night, and again the old boat took abuse; squirming eels, mud and grass all were part of an evening's venture. Often during those times your patience would be tried to the limits because of the gnats and mosquitoes that plagued you. Anyone who lives on the creek can vouch that those evenings with no wind and high humidity are ideal for such torment. How a small, insignificant insect can cause a person such aggravation I'll never know. There have been times I ( continued on next page) June 28,1984 , The Suffolk Times Reminder on Consent Forms By ANN BANNON, L.P.N. In the event that your child is left in the care of a childcare provider, grandparents or someone other than the parents or legal guardians, a medical consent form must be signed and left with the person caring for the child. I am amazed at how few parents are aware of this form and how necessary it is in the event their child requires emergency treatment or care. These forms can be obtained from your local hospital or pediatrician. A form must be completed for each child and it is best if the form is notarized. If you cannot obtain a formal consent form, the following can be written on paper and notarized: Focus.., (continued from previous page) wanted to jump overboard just to get away from them. I can remember our next door neighbor, Clayton Billard, who made wooden rowboats of good cedar with oak ribs which he sold for just about what a good set of oars and oarlocks would cost today. The nice part about those cedar boats was that they were light and easy to get off the beach and into the water. Remnants of wooden boats of all sorts will always be with us, I hope, as they represent a period of joy to many of us. Today there is a special cult of people which still cherishes a wide variety of wooden boats. They baby them as one would a fine piece of furniture. The grace of wood skillfully crafted is a thing of beauty, and the old rowboats that we as kids cut our teeth on will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew them. "In the event of a medical emergency in- volving my children named I hereby delegate to take legal responsibility for decisions concerning their medical well -being should I not be available to give my con- sent. Signed: Date: Relationship to Children: It is important to know that children under the age of 18 can't consent to their own treatment unless they are an "emancipated minor" and have in their possession a card that states this fact. Often parents will leave their children in the care of the child's grandparents, and you should be aware that grandparents cannot sign or authorize treatment in the event of an emergency. I also recommend that parents list on the back of the forms any medication allergies and /or food sensitivities their child has. Take a few moments before the need arises and check to see if you have a completed, signed and notarized medical consent form on hand for each child. Have a safe and happy sumnmer!
