Putting Your Money on Spring
By PAULSTOUTENBURGH
Last week I mentioned that perhaps
winter's back had been broken but not to
bet on it. Well, now I'm ready to bet.
Every trace of ice has left our creeks and
bays. My pond down in the pasture has
once again become the watering hole for
the cows.
The ice didn't disappear without
leaving its mark wherever it had been.
Docks were lifted high, giving them the
appearance of some high diver's
platform. Piles were completely
wrenched from the bottom and toppled
over. Some drifted away unless the
landowner had the foresight to tie them
ashore.
The power of ice, like the sea, is
unbelievable. We know it to break up our
roads and loosen concrete, or freeze our
car's engine should we not put anti- freeze
in. It can split huge boulders, as we've
seen along the Sound when we take our
walks along its rocky shores.
We're told that without this power to
chip and crack away we would have no
earth as we know it today, for from its
beginning there was nothing but solid
rock. Over eons of time the continual
fracturing of this solid mass started the
eventual breakdown that continues
today. This, and other factors, like
chemicals that dissolve rock, along with
a multitude of lichens and plants, all help
to break down this solid mass. All these
added to the grinding mill of the glaciers
and the sandblasting and wearing effects
of wind and turbulent waters have
created the life- dependent material
which we know as soil.
All of us know the North and South
Poles are covered with ice. They are the
remains of the great glaciers of the past.
Those huge reservoirs of frozen fresh
water are now in jeopardy of melting
because of climatic conditions created by
air pollution.
It is a complicated process of events,
Wa4tc
but if science is correct this melting of
the ice caps will cause a rise in the sea
level throughout the world. This could be
disastrous to those who live along the
low -lying seacoast. But hold on! Don't go
out and sell your waterfront property
right away, for these predictions are yet
far down the road. Nevertheless we
should give serious consideration to the
causes and effects of what we do in
today's world. They may have grave
consequences in the future.
Back to the Pond
Leaving those lofty thoughts and
predictions, let's travel to something
more elementary -- my pasture pond.
When the ice left, I found raccoon prints
around its perimeter in the new, soft
mud. He had come to feast on the dead
gold fish that had perished from the lack
of oxygen in the water when the ice was
thick above. There must have been just
too many fish in too small a space and
therefore nature eliminated the surplus.
They died of suffocation. Others lived.
Nothing was wasted. The raccoon will
have food, the pond will rebound, and my
gold fish will eat the mosquito larvae.
Ice affects us in many ways -- whether
as a setting for an Olympic spectacular,
by giving our creeks the ability to lift
docks, by inundating our land with sea
water from the polar caps, or simply by
creating a spectacle to admire in an
icicle hanging from our roof. It is just one '
more amazing dimension of the world
around us.

SPRAY ICE MEMORIES -- Scenes like this hopefully are far behind us
because it takes long periods of severe cold to create salt water spray
ice like this.
