Winter
By PAUL STOUTENBURGH
The wind has let up and now a cold still-
ness settles in.
The sun has lost itself behind the woods.
All that's left is the evening glow,
Silhouetting the stark naked trees.
It's a cold and wild feeling. Yet one of
quiet and awareness.
A deer mouse ventures out. Big -eyed, he
views the winter world.
Ears twitch. Nose quivers.
There's still time to collect and store.
Darkness, the ruler of night takes over.
A star, with his permission, shines
alone.
"Star light. Star bright. First star I see
tonight."
A rabbit leaves its matted nest of leaves.
All day he's dozed, a part of the wood-

land floor.
Again, eyes search, ears twitch and nose
quivers.
Bits of green are still to be found along
the hedgerow.
The snow has covered the land.
Something moves in winter's night.
Friend or foe?
Only they will know.
