Colorful Memories of the White Stuff

What are your earliest memories of
snow? The recent little show of white stuff
got me thinking about my first
recollections of snow. Perhaps it was
because it was Christmas and I was very
young that I remember my first snow so
vividly. It was the
perfect setting for Focus on
that Yuletide
occasion with its Nature
mystery and
wonderment that
build up in children's minds 'til they
almost explode with excitement. Going to
bed on Christmas Eve was something we
did without any coaxing, but to get to sleep
and be "snug in our beds" was another.
It was the tradition in our home not to
have a tree up before Christmas. Ev-
erything was left for Santa to do. How
my parents ever managed to keep pack-
ages, trees and all that goes into that
wonderful early morning scene on
Christmas secret is to this day beyond
me. Nevertheless, coming into the living
room and seeing the Christmas tree in all
its glory with the toys and boxes below
truly galvanized in my memory what a
perfect Christmas should be.
Of course, we thought we hardly slept
that night but I'm sure we did. We'd left
cookies and milk out for Santa and had
been especially good in anticipation of
that extra - special day coming up. We
were up Christmas morning and found it
had snowed in the night. So while we
waited for the okay from our parents to
go downstairs we looked out the window
into the wondrous world of white that
lay all around us. Then our young eyes
