November 13, 1980 - Fall Garden Is RewardingSECOND SECTION Tbr *Uffolh TiMC5 NOVEMBER 13, 1980 Fall Garden Is Rewardinq- How the world around us opens up as the leaves come off the trees. Just this mor- ning, as I rubbed the sleepers out of my eyes and looked out my bedroom window, I saw for the first time a new homestead in the tree tops. It was a squirrel's nest being built of leaves. We usually think of squirrels living in hollow trees. Perhaps that's from story books or perhaps that was true years ago when there were more mature forests around and a lot more woods than there are now. But today the leaf nest is the more typical dwelling for this busy member of the rodent family. It's like the muskrats' home. It depends on the surroundings. If the muskrats live in our large salt marshes with gradual sloping uplands their homes will be built out on the marsh, something like the homes of the beaver we've seen pictures of. The difference is that the mounds of muskrats are made of mud and grass and homes of beavers are made mostly of sticks and mud. Yet the usual muskrat home here on Long Island is the un- derground den that's built into the boggy sides of our creeks. Their entrances are underwater and are easily visible at low tide. ftan @M M2ET(q As I lay there in bed watching that busy little aerialist scampering back and forth with mouthfuls of leaves, I was reminded how agile they are. Squirrels literally run along the branches and jump and hang as if there were no such thing as height. On the ground they hop, and seldom run in the true sense of the word. Squirrels must enjoy the swaying tree tops, for this one's home now swayed in the strong northwest wind. In my mind's eye I can see this winter a gray ball of fur curled up inside this well - insulated home as the winds and cold howl about. Although squirrels are active most of the year, in a severe cold and snow spell they sleep long days and nights awaiting the eventual thaw that will Shop where you have RADISHES- -The spoils of a fall garden are many for those who take the time to plan for one. (516) 288 -1682 leaves to build their winter's nest close to their food supply. We are in between seasons now. The ice in the bucket outside told me that winter dhys are not too far away. Yet the warmth of the shrinking sunlight also tells me that we still have a grace period and winter is not yet here. One day it's warm and sunny. The next is cold and blustery. I had planned on just this kind of weather some time ago when I tilled the still productive land of summer for my fall garden. The weeds had just about taken over by then and it was difficult to see any organization in what once had been neat, clean rows of vegetables. As someone once said, "Turn your back on your garden and you'll soon have a patch of weeds." Long Winter Ahead Once the area was tilled and again restored to some order, it was mostly a matter of time before the earth once again would produce for me. My limp cauliflower, sprouts and cabbage plants amazingly came to life almost over night after planting, and today are just starting to yield their bounty. Boiled cabbage, Cole slaw and sauerkraut are but a few of the things to come. The sprouts will surely be on the Thanksgiving table, and with a little help in the weather so will the cauliflower. Besides these vegetables we hurriedly put in a few rows of beets, radishes and carrots. The carrots never did take because of the dryness, but the beets and radishes came out perfectly. My only complaint is that the set was not that good because of the dry weather and so the crop is about half. Yet fall vegetables seem to have a special color and ruggedness for this time of year and because it's the bitter end for the garden they always seem to taste the best. There's a long winter ahead.
