A YEAR AGO, I COULDN'T HAVE TOLD YOU WHAT IT STOOD FOR. TODAY, THOSE THREE INITIALS PROBABLY SAVED MY LIFE." When Dick Albert decided to have a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test, after seeing three TV programs in a week recommending it for men over 50, he really wasn't worried. After all, he had no symptoms, no discomfort. And he had a digital exam the year before. But at sixty -one, he felt an ounce of prevention was worth a pound of cure. He couldn't have been more right. After the PSA test, Dick's physi- cian, one of the Urologists at Southampton Hospital, ordered a sono- gram as part of the diagnostic process. "As a result of the PSA and sono- gram, my doctor found a small growth in the prostate." "The hospital biopsied the growth and found that it was positive." "Fortunately, the nodule was dis- covered in time. I understand that early detection is very important in prostate diagnosis. The data on this procedure indicates that I should have a complete recovery." "My physician's instincts and experi- THE SOUTHAMPTON PRESS /JULY 29, 1993 ence made the criti- cal difference. If not for him, the out- come might have been very different. He's exactly the kind of doctor you want on your team when a situation like this arises." Caring, insightful medical person- nel. Thorough testing that leaves no stone unturned. State -of- the -art diagnos- tic equipment. These are what Dick Albert found when he came to Southampton Hospital. "I'm certainly glad I had the PSA done. Without it, I probably would be fac- ing a very different future." At Southampton Hospital, that's what we're all about. It's just a matter of out the door and onto the beach. In the back is a beautiful salt marsh with an osprey platform that proudly hosts the parents and three healthy young. I've watched their progress through my scope and am fascinated by the adults' feeding habits. The male will bring in a fish, usually a bunker, and leave it at the nest. From then on the fe- male stands over it and tears small pie- ces off and ever so daintily (and that's the only word that describes it) feeds the young. It's something to see a huge bird tow- ering over the three small young with a little tidbit in its big hooked bill, slowly and patiently offering the food to the young. Often I'll see the head of the par- ent bird tilt to one side so it can better place the ripped-off morsel in the young one's mouth. By now they are starting to get feath- ers in their wings and the grey down they have been wearing also is slowly turning to spotted feathers. Even now I'll see them testing their tiny wings as the wind blows over them. Like many osprey nests, it hosts a house sparrow's nest amongst its sticks and debris. I remember seeing this trait of protection 50 or more years ago when I photographed my first osprey nest. That was before the decline in their pop- ulation due to DDT. Those years were exactly what Rachel Carson predicted in her monumental book Silent Spring. In the 50s and 60s our East End osprey population plummeted and all but dis- appeared. Since DDT was banned, it's reassuring to see that now our osprey population has bounced back to almost pre -DDT days. In those early years when ospreys were booming, most lived in trees along our creeks, bays and sound front. They were also found inland, some in the mid- dle of farm fields where lone trees marked boundaries. The '38 hurricane came along and took most of our big trees down. That was some storm! I was in high school then and will never for- get it. Today most osprey nests are found on man -made platforms. The small salt marsh and waterway in back of the cottage is one that is out of harm's way, for it has never been dredged and flows just as it did years ago. I've gone up these wondrous water- ways with face mask and fli ppers, us- wally snorkeling on an outgoing tide. The advantage of going into a small creek at low tide is that the water is flowing out and has been filtered by the great mass of greenery that lines the marsh edge. Each blade of grass acts like the fibers in an oil or air filter, collecting the suspended material in the water and making visibility almost perfect. It's fun to watch the barnacles work with their wand -like hands grasping for food as the water passes over them. Mussels along the edge are open and you can look right into them. The wa- ter here is filtered again as the mussel captures the nutrients that pass through. Occasionally you'll see an eel's tail or head sticking out from a mat of green cabbage grass. Spider crabs walk slowly on their stalked legs, their tiny claws picking up bits of edible debris that are transfer- red to their ever-moving mouths. Per- haps in an old tin can or hidden under an old sunken log, you'll see a dogfish, or toadfish as some people call them. Like some huge dog at the entrance of his doghouse, the well-camouflaged dog- fish awaits some unsuspecting prey to pass by. As kids we used to hate them and I'm afraid we often did them in when one was hooked on our line. When they were area. If, at the end of the FREE ORIENTATION you decide to stay for the hypnotic pan of the session, you pay a one time fee of $60 (by check cash, or Visa MC) which includes an audio cassette tape, supportive written material, and free follow up sessions, if necessary. You will be aware and awake at all times. If, for any reason, you cannot be hypnotized, your money will be resumed on the spot That's a guarantee in writing. After hypnosis, you will immediately QUIT SMOKING or LOSE WEIGHT. The effects of hypnosis can be dramatic and oftentimes miraculous. You can walk out of the session with absolutely no desire, urge or impulse to smoke. Or you can lose 30, 50, even over 100 pounds after just ONE SESSION. Hypnosis is the most powerful mind focusing technique known to man. And it can tossed ashore, they would give out a croak with a gutteral sound. Perhaps is fascinating to see them all swim by with their mouths wide open filtering the nutrients from the rich waters of our creek. No wonder there is such concern whenever we see some of our wetlands being disturbed or filled. As a young boy I can remember an- other bird that nested in our tall thatch grass: a marsh wren that was always chattering and always building nests. She would build three or four or even more to discourage other birds from moving in and use only one for her true nest. Today I can't find a trace of a marsh wren in our creeks any more. Perhaps they are trying to tell us some- thing. The clapper rail lives in the salt marsh but nests in the high dry grass ar- eas around the marsh. Our salt marsh and the accompanying waterways are the life blood of our bays. Without a healthy creek and marsh, we'll not have a healthy bay. So if there's ever going to be a push for "saving the bays," we'd better start with our creeks and their tributaries. There's too much at stake to overlook these important resources no matter where they are . Last Week's Solution that's why they are locally called toad- fish. Of course, there would always be kil- lies moving about, but the fish that fas- cinated me most were the schools of shiners or silversides. Their glistening silver color made them something to see, especially if you drift up close enough to see their silvery stripe. Later in the season we will occasionally see schools of silver - bodied baby bunkers moving in great masses. The group seems to act as one. A dash with your arm toward them will immediately change the entire group's direction.
