October 27, 1993 - Tracking the ChangesB6 Alternative Decor (Continued from Page Bl) have Manhattan galleries and East End seasonal headquarters (she in Bridge- hampton, he in Sag Harbor). Ms. Pick- ering, who has been collecting Moroccan weavings for more than 15 years, has led tours to Morocco and written and lectured frequently on the subject of Moroccan textiles. Peter Da- vies has been collecting kilims since well before the current craze. He started in 1961, established the Turkana Gallery in 1976 and is considered a pioneer in po- pularizing kilims on the eastern sea- board. Colorful, portable, beautiful — kilims today are the peak of chic. In line with the current multicultural imperative, they are boldly ethnic and even deliver a subtle feminist message: traditionally made by women for their dowries and dedicated to the uses of domesticity, they are a Middle Eastern counterpart, it you will, of the American quilt. Their presence suggests hipness, right - thinking, and, in some cases, connois- seurship. Collectors scour the world for 3 Exhibits them, scholars dedicate themselves to tracing their history, understanding the techniques of their creation and unra- veling the mysteries of their design. For anyone as yet uninitiated, Mr. Da- vies' book, just out from Rizzoli, The Tribal Eye: Antique Kilims of Anatolia ($29.95) might serve as a fascinating in- troduction to the art of the kilim, which, generally speaking, originates in Tur- key and especially in the central Turk- ish plain of Anatolia. The book surveys all of the fieldwork and scholarship on the subject and synthesizes current thinking. Each phase of the complicated pro- cess undertaken by the women of An- atolia is examined, from the spinning of wool into yarn to the passing on from generation to generation of traditional motifs and designs. The final chapter presents a collection of 64 spectacular color plates, with apologies for the in- ability of the camera to capture what the French call matiere —the visual and tactile qualities of the surface of the weaving. That you will be able to exper- ience firsthand at the field house in Wa- ter Mill over the Columbus Day weekend. At the Galleries Benton Gallery Solo exhibitions by four artists — Daria Deshuk, Frank Hyder, Connie Fox and Tamara Gianis —will go on view in a new show at the Benton Gallery at 365 tions of handblown glass, pottery, fiber art, jewelry and the contemporary gold jewelry designs of Lee Elliot. A hint of change was in the air yesterday when a cool wind blew out of the north- west and it kept up throughout most of the night. Our chilly evening walk tog the beach was just after the sun set with the clarity of a crisp winter's day. We saw the first star show itself in the slowly darkening sky. Perhaps it was a planet for it shone so brightly. By the time we returned to the cabin other stars were sprinkled in the heavens above. The clear air revealed a bright yellow sun this morning that flooded the bed- room with its glowing warmth. How that brightness can help with one's attitude for the coming day! Irking out in front of the cabin, I see big yellow . heads of seaside goldenrod starting to open. I remember these tough durable plants growing at the base of the dunes all along the ocean beach when I was a naturalist over at Fire Island. It seems to me they grew much bigger and taller there than the ig from amongst the trees. Hidden from the now warm sun, they must need a supplement of heat to make life a bit more bearable. Little Blue, our sailboat, lies quiet in the breathless stillness, its reflection duplicating itself in the mirrored water. She must be at least 30 years old by now but still has many tricks left in her. Just Yesterday late in the afternoon we took her out for a sail and a gust of wind took us by surprise and heeled us over to the gunnels. Within a split second she had old us there was still lots of life left in her weathered blue hull. It's almost unbelievable the change that has taken over the bay since La- bor Day. H this were a typical summer's day, it would already be busy with boat- ers, but today there's only one lone boater heading across the bay in hopes of finding some fishing in his secret spot. I must stop here and tell you of one of the great sights I've just seen—it's one I never tire of. Just 100 feet away, an osprey flew by with a shining, dripping, huge silvery bunker (menhaden) in his sure.
