Folks on both the Nort) and South Forks were interested becau , the sighting of a whale has not been recon ed here since the 1800s. Yet whales wer quite plentiful in Colonial times and as matter of fact whaling got its start here o the East End by the early settlers copyin the methods that the Indians used. Along our South Shore whales were ofte spotted and pursued. Once harpooned the, were pulled ashore and there on the bead cut up and processed into oil. It was a surd . sign of a good day's whaling when from across the bay you could see the huge fires of the whalers boiling down the blubber in their big iron pots. There are some who say that it is from these big fires that Fire Island got its name. Today we can get a glimpse of these wonderful creatures by taking a short trip offshore aboard the Oceanus whale wat- ching vessel. I've done that and can heartily recommend the trip. We had humpbacks blowing right alongside of the boat and fin - back whales spouting off in the distance at the same time. Whales are seldom seen in shore any more but I can still remember the rare occasions when one would parallel the National Seashore at Fire Island when I was a naturalist there. From Ranger Sta- tion to Ranger Station their progress would SuDE -LN or FREE- JuNDIN6 A RAN6f a ..It na. l 't Sflf- CLEANING OVEN • Black %too oven hoar and aacksplash • Automatic pdodas ignition • Clock, minde tins, and be reported so that when the star of the show came along there would be a crowd on hand for viewing. It's hard to tell just what was in our bays in early times before so- called civilization settled in. We assume that seals were com- mon in the winter on most of the sand penin- sulas that jut out in the bays. In fact, there is one theory that Robins Island got its name from a derivative of a Dutch word that referred to the seals there. I'm sure our bays, sound and ocean fronts harbored a wide variety of sea mammals in those early days. Back in the early '50s I remember going out in Long Island Sound with my new bride Barbara in a canoe to experience the thrill of paddling out to a school of porpoises. It was exciting to drift and have these hand- some sleek playful animals move through as we sat in awe of their grace. But, sorry to say, today I see no porpoises in the Sound along our shores. In those days they were quite common in the Sound and I remember the fishermen cursing them when they came through, for they said they always chased the fish away. It was a bit more unusual to see porpoises in the bay but I can still remember seeing schools of them as a teenager. One time in particular we saw a school of them dashing along in their up- and -down pursuit off the great sand banks of Southampton on the bay where we had gone for a picnic. Usually we sailed over, anchored our boats offshore smart shoppers SAY. F11 RATHER BLJYAT __ NASSAU _— SUFFOLK BELLMORE ............. 785-4600 On Sunrise Hwy. Since they are on a continuous erosion pattern no green material has ever been able to establish itself there. The stark nak- ed, sandy - colored banks are a landmark even today from almost anywhere offshore. From the top it seems as if you could see forever. I know that even those with youthful vitality would be puffing before reaching the top. But what a glorious spot for a picnic. In those days few people ever ventured there. One trip stands out in my mind above all others. We sailed over and anchored, climb- ed up, and were about to do our usual runn- ing and jumping off into space to see who could jump the farthest when we noticed an approaching storm. It was so spectacular that we all stopped and watched. Our tiny sail boats looked insignificant far below as their white hulls stood out against the black of the water reflecting the menacing sky above. Then the wind started to blow and the sand was unlepshed in a howling blast up the banks and upon us. Our hands covered our faces as we ran and hid behind some bushes further back to get out of the fury. As quickly as it started, it ended. The sun came out and our jumping and picnicking continued. It wasn't until years later, when I became more interested in how the world about us functions, that I realized why the high B7 banks of Southampton never were able to retain any growth on their sides. Knowing the severity of our northwest winter winds, and how they must charge across the ocean bay, ripping at the loose sand, I realize why they are as they are. I've seen this same sort of wind erosion over on the barrier beaches along the South Shore and this is why the "Keep Off the Dunes" signs are so important. At least here nature is given a chance to build through the wonder of dune grass which holds the sand and lets the dunes establish.
