Speaking of The Suffolk Times' reader survey,
here are a few hiphliphts, none of which should sur-
prise you, dear reader: 1) Almost everyone loves
Judy Ahrens, rating her photography higher than
any other element in the paper. 2) Paul Stouten-
burgh's "Focus on Nature" is our most popular col-
umn. 3) Remarkably, Joanne Sherman's column is
:he second most popular, even though she left us
months ago to join The Shelter Island Reporter.
(But we're working on that, aren't we, Joanne ?) 4)
Dinosaurs, unite! Black & white photography beats
out color, 58% to 37%! .

Dear Troy and Joan, Jeff and Sue, an
staff of The Suffolk Times:
Congratulations on your most recen
(in a long history) of well - deserved
awards for excellence "in journalism.
As a deeply devoted reader of 24-
plus years, I never, for one moment,
take The Suffolk Times for granted
(the newspaper I read from cover-to-
cover, more thoroughly than any
other, despite a daily delivery of The
Other Times).
`I do, however, sometimes fail to
acknowledge as often as I might my
appreciation for the pleasure of hav-
ing a newspaper of such extraordi-
nary standards produced /written by
and about friends an neighbors.
I positively count on Judy Ahrens's
- xcellent and evocative photographs

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Gustayson:
I want you to know how much I
enjoy your paper.
Thank you for the item on "The
Hungry Ocean" (March 2 "Observer"
column). I mentioned it to my wife and
got the book for my birthday. Very
good and, yes, it's.nice to see a book of
this type with the costs and wages.
Enjoy your columns. My favorite is
Paul Stoutenburgh. His stories would
make a great book. Also hope you
can get Joanne [Sherman] back.
Best of luck to you, and keep up
the good work with your paper.

point of view exactly in his cartoons,
and I am never disappointed. I know I
will find wit that delights in Barbara
Michelson's column, even if I leave the
cooking of her excellent recipes to the
chef in the family, my husband Chris.
And view Paul Stoutenburgh's col-
umn as an abiding treasure, deeply
moving and satisfying, as it reflects on
a principal joy of living here: the beau-
ty of the North Fork's natural world. I
depend on the classified for yard sales
and important purchases (ray last two
cars, for example) and the police blot-
ter to keep me posted as to quality of
life indicators. And I am grateful for
the thoughtful consideration of the
issues that face all of us as residents
regularly embodied in the editorials.
Thank you all, and bravo!
