"It's not just] the building itself," he said. "It's the kids and the teach- ers that made it special." He remembers students crying when it was time to move to another school building for the second grade. And he admitted there were tears in his and his staff's eyes as well. The building is still owned by the Mattituck- Cutchogue Union Free School District and the school board continues to wrestle with its future. Superintendent Dwayne Adsitt said the building, after some work, could be used to accommodate administra- tive offices. But with so much attention focused on finishing an addition to Cutchogue East, no decision has yet been reached. The school committee is expected to focus on how the build- ,i4& will be used this year, he said. Suffolk Times nature columnist Paul Stoutenburgh of Cutchogue remembers walking more than a mile from Fleet's Neck to Cutchogue West in winter weather before there was school bus service back in the 1930s. He said that after arriving chilled to the bone, he would go to his classroom on the second floor, in the northwest corner of the building, where, on windy days, it was cold inside the building. He also holds memories of his teacher, Dot Hand, who was a strict disciplinarian but well loved by her students. Whenever one of the boys would get out of hand, she would use a leather strap and "give our legs a warming up," he reported. As for the students, they carried out their share of pranks, Mr. Stoutenburgh recalls. He told of a group of students putting a large outhouse on the school steps one Halloween and another group who hoisted a chair up the flagpole in front of the school. Each stop will bring about 220 passengers to the village, arriving at 7 a.m. and departing at 4 p.m. It'll dock at the north side of the docks at the Long Island Rail Road station. The village will receive $1,200 per docking. Greenport would pro- vide water and other services for the boats "at going rates," said the mayor. disposal, in line with a suggestion made by Trustee Jamie Mills. The village will assist by providing lists of vendors. ■ Hello? Anybody out there? What's a public hearing without the public?
