Spring on the wing?
It wasn't this osprey, but one very much like it swooped down into East Creek in Cutchogue this week. A sharp -
eyed resident notified nature columnists Paul and Barbara Stoutenburgh, and they did some swooping of their
own, racing over to East Creek on Saturday and, sure enough, a majestic osprey was landing on the tripod nest
there. Since then osprey sightings have been reported on Shelter Island and at Husing Pond in Mattituck, which
means, despite the calendar and the groundhog and this week's snow, it must be spring.
Speaking of The Suffolk Times' reader survey, here are a few
highlights, none of which should surprise you, dear reader: 1)
Almost everyone loves Judy Ahrens, rating her photography
higher than any other element in the paper. 2) Paul Stoutenburgh's
"Focus on Nature" is our most popular column. 3) Remarkably,
Joanne Sherman's column is the second most popular, even though
she left us months ago to join The Shelter Island Reporter. (But
we're working on that, aren't we, Joanne ?) 4) Dinosaurs, unite!
