Our bedroom was designed so that lying in
bed, we'd be able to look out into the woods,
and we've gotten much enjoyment from it.
There's always something going on; new
leaves forming, the wind. the rain, the. snow
on the branches, stark naked li nibs, squirrels
playing tag in Ile treetops. the woodpecker
+.-raking his rounds. or• the simple joy of
hatching our comic chieka(ice wnrlting

like everything in the natural world we must
make the effort to observe. It's a state of
mind.
One shrug that reveals a special treasure
to me when it leaves are gone is the
_ bayberry. This shrub gels its name from the
fact you can usually find i1 along oily creeks
and hay,. '1'111, IS 11,11 In say It doesn't grow Ill

bayberry scent.
The waxy clusters of berries were used to
((lake bayberry candles in colonial days.
and th(y are still used today by the hardy to
p101 01; that hutch of 'old' and scent. of
bayberry (hiring the Christmas holidays.
It's 0 laborious process, for you must pick
(quantities of berries, put. them in water and
boil then( until the wax IS rendered and
floats to the top. It's such a time- consuming
jolt 1hal few people do it. and those who do
blend the high - scented wax with paraffin to
gel Ins out of their efforts.
I never can resist squeezing the berries
between my fingers whenever I pass a bush
and then sniffing that most wondrous scent.
If the berries aren't out as yet. I do the same
with the leaf, which by the way can be used
in cooking. very much like the true herb hay
leaf.
If these attributes aren't enough to give
the bayberry a place in your hall of fame,
then here are two others. Picked and dried,
the berries make a beautiful winter bouquet.
The other attribute of this wonderful plant
is that the berries act as survival foot(
through the winter for many species of
birds. For example. when migrating tree
swallow's are caught in a frost and all the
flying insects have disappeared. they have
the uncanny ability to survive on bayberry.
This is most unusual, for when the other
swallows arc caught in this predicament
they die of starvation. Then, for the rest of
the year, these berries stand out as the hope
of the future for the winter birds. It mustn't
be the most appetizing berry, for they are
usually left until last. 1111! when the chips are
down and 0 blanket of snow covers every-
thing else, I'm sure these bayberries make
the difference between life and death.
